We are grateful to all those who joined us for a thoughtful conversation about how emotional intelligence can shape who we become, especially in turbulent times.

In this Community Meeting, we talked with Aakash Chowkase, Ph.D., Associate Research Scientist at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, whose work focuses on how schools can foster emotional intelligence and character education at scale through rigorous, real-world research. Facilitated by Amy L. Eva, Ph.D., Associate Education Director at the Greater Good Science Center, this gathering invited us to explore how emotional intelligence can serve as a foundation for character, compassion, and resilience in schools and communities.

Together, we explored:

  • What emotional intelligence really is and why it matters for students, educators, and families
  • How SEL fuels character development and helps students meet challenges with integrity and empathy
  • The role of character in addressing pressing global issues like climate change, racism, and polarization
  • Practical ways educators can weave SEL into daily teaching to nurture both academic and personal growth

In today’s climate, where uncertainty and division can easily overwhelm, SEL and character development remind us of the power educators hold in shaping not only minds but hearts. Thank you for reflecting, connecting, and sharing ideas and practices for helping students grow in the qualities that make the world better!
