Why are some students chronically absent? Why do some disengage during group work? How can schools be more culturally responsive and sustaining?
You could answer these questions with surveys, focus groups, or academic research. Or you could go straight to the source and involve students themselves, teaching them the inquiry process and how to advocate for systems change based on their own findings.
Join our education team and special guests to learn about Youth-Led Participatory Action Research (YPAR)—what happens when students become the researchers, and how their evidence can drive policy shifts in their schools and communities. Our panel will consist of YPAR Network researchers Emily Ozer, Brian Villa, and Heather Kennedy as well as a YPAR alum who will be able to share what it’s like to go through the process. Throughout the panel discussion, you will have opportunities to reflect on and discuss what YPAR could look like at your school.
Together, we will:
- Learn what youth-led participatory action research (YPAR) is and why it’s a unique and powerful way to engage youth in social-emotional learning and systems change
- Understand different “levels” or entry points for getting YPAR started at your site
- Learn about and explore specific resources to help you engage students in the YPAR process
At a time of increasing disengagement and social isolation, giving young people a meaningful role in shaping the systems they’re part of may be just what’s needed to turn the tide.
